Tommy Womack’s Election Day Prayer
Tuesday November 04th 2008, 8:20 am

Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed by the name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory forever.

And now, Lord, if I might interject some of my own prose, I hope it will be pleasing to your ear.

This is an historic day. I was telling my son last night that he was witnessing history in the making. Either way, it’s going to be one of the most monumental days in the history of the world. Never has the entire globe followed a U.S. election like they’re following this one. It’s not even close. Lord, one candidate is leading by 5-7% in American polls; in other countries, he leads by anywhere from 30 to 70%.

The world knows that when my country sneezes, they catch a cold. People all over the planet see this choice, this year, this moment, as a chance to take back sanity in the top office on the planet. Today, Lord, sanity will either rise like the sun in the east, or insanity will prevail and my beloved United States will begin its setting like the sun in the west.

Lord, I say this prayer for my son. I want him to grow up in a country full of promise like I did.

I say it with true Christian faith, even as I profess to Thee, that the Christian Evangelical Right has as much to do with Your teachings, as Pat Boone’s “Tutti-Frutti” has to do with rock and roll.

I say this prayer, Dear Lord, because until eight years ago my great nation had never once dealt with a president who is genuinely… stupid. Lord, the U.S. has had plenty of flawed mortal men in the Oval Office. Nixon was devious. Buchanan and Harding were weak. Both Johnsons were drunks. Grant was incompetent. Jefferson, Kennedy & Clinton were horn-dogs. But none of those men, or any other past presidents, were ever what you would consider stupid. Honestly stupid. My country’s perfect record in that regard lies in ruins now.

Lord, I come to you in prayer for the survival – the renewal - of my great land. I ask you to bless America, and by doing so, the world.

I humbly beseech Thee, for change we can believe in.

In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost…

Amen

It’s a Sam’s Club vs. Dollar General Election

Below is an excerpt of Tim Pawlenty’s address to the Republican Convention. I had to catch his speech on C-span because Fox and MSNBC had their respective blow hards on talking absolute nonsense while The Minnesota Governor addressed the convention crowd in his home state. I was curious about his remarks because, until Gov. Palin burst onto the scene, Pawlenty was the likeliest of choices to be McCain’s VP selection. His comments refer to McCain’s appeal to traditional Republicans:

“He understands the concerns of everyday Americans like you and me.
What I like to call "Sam's Club Republicans.
These voters are on a tight budget.
They're looking for value and accountability at the store. And they're looking for value and accountability from their government.
John McCain connects with Sam's Club voters.
He gets it.
He will force government to live within its means, just like families do.”

This comment may seem innocent enough. But it points to a fundamental and underlying problem with the Republican message. Hey, don’t worry; I’ll point out the fundamental problem with the Democratic message shortly.

Who doesn’t love to drive their mini van to Sam’s Club to go load up with hundreds of dollars of groceries and have a fully stocked pantry and sit back and be happy with the fact that, once they take into consideration the gas money they burned to get to outskirts of town where Sam’s clubs are generally located and the annual club fee, they may have saved 5% on their overall grocery bill? It’s a good feeling indeed. Who doesn’t love that feeling?

I’ll tell you who: Those that don’t have a mini van and must walk or take public transportation to the grocery – or what passes for a grocery in many urban/inner city areas. Those that can only spend $50 a week and can only haul home one or two bags of what is deemed absolutely necessary for a few days. Those who live in “food deserts” – and there are millions- who don’t have access to healthy foods, fresh vegetables, and anything other than processed crappy food that is marked up 300%. Those Dollar General shoppers who do themselves a service by making an effort to save a few pennies by walking, taking the bus or cab, or driving their cars a few extra blocks out of their way to “splurge” on brand name items nearing expiration or being on “close out” that may only be marked up 50%. This is a real problem in America still. It exists in every city in the country of any size. It affects people of all types, living on fixed incomes and tight budgets. It’s generally the hardest working most overlooked segment of our population that’s most affected. It has a trickle down effect on many of the other issues plaguing America like the rising cost of health care, obesity rates, crime (nothing disenfranchises folks like not being able to afford staples). The absurdly, comically Caucasian Republican Convention attendees know nothing of this world. I promise you, one of John McCain’s 6 homes isn’t located in a food desert…maybe a real desert, but not a food desert.

But perhaps the Republican Machine simply doesn’t care. If you are a voter who can not get to the polls, or traditionally has not gone to the polls, you are inconsequential. You are a number that doesn’t matter. You are not part of the Republican’s target market. For the people, by the people, of the people, but only if you can show a Sam’s Club Membership card.

It is a good thing that both candidates/parties are running on a platform of change. The last 16 years have provided our country with extremely poor, unethical leadership. Lies, horrible lies, corrupted the Clinton and Bush reigns. Obama and McCain have distanced themselves from their respective predecessors. The shame of it is Hillary would have been a great vice-presidential candidate. But with Hilary comes Bill. The image of him, mouthing “I love you” to Hilary as she spoke to the Democratic convention literally made me ill.

And that is the baggage that the Democratic Party carries with it. As a former Democrat and newly self appointed independent voter who felt betrayed by Clinton, in particular, I believe empty great speech giving and empty rhetoric haunts the Dems. I would love to see Obama narrow his focus on three actionable issues on which he feels his administration can truly affect change. He can make a difference on the tone of the campaign by getting a taut message together and repeating a specific mantra at each stop and challenging McCain to do the same. American voters want and will listen to specifics from Obama.

---------------------------Digression warning!!!!!!-------------------
By the way, any of you who think the Lipstick on a Pig comment was directed at Palin, need to grow up. Furthermore you need to stop contributing to the ridiculousness that the Republican machine – not necessarily McCain – but the machine, is perpetuating on us all. Shame on McCain for endorsing the ridiculous commercial airing that dares to address this non-issue. Also, if you are falling for the claim by these ugly Republicans that there is a liberal media bias, then you surely must believe in a Vast Left Wing conspiracy. After all, Hillary asserted a Right Wing one, so you must have one too. It’s a ridiculous assertion, and if you have a “fair and balanced” bone in your body, you’ll realize that media does serve an important service in our free country. Proof is in the lies from both the Clinton and Bush presidencies uncovered by tough, fair, reporting and journalistic integrity by America’s mainstream media outlets. I’m not talking cable news outlets, radio talk show hosts, and bloggers. And since when is the National Enquirer considered mainstream media. I heard somebody on Fox as quoting the National Enquirer as a culprit involved in a left wing media attack against Palin. Good Grief!
---------------------------But I Digress-----------------------------

As to Palin... If the Democrats had dug up a figure such as Palin, the Rove Right Wing machine, the very people who wrote Palin’s speech at the convention, would have drug her through the mud. McCain is a tough guy that is in good health and will likely – hopefully – live through an 8 year term…. but what if……? Palin gave a great speech that rallied the base and attracted fence sitting independents. But the very thing that attracted, could soon repel. If she repeats the empty rhetoric and folksy “attacks”, it will soon ring hollow. As an independent, I want to know much, much, much, more about her. Already some of the things asserted about her governing style and good decisions are being legitimately questioned. Thus the attacks from the Rove Republican Machine divert the questions and make us debate Pigs and lipstick. (
By the way, you should check out this book, written by a McCain advisor who is a female)

While the vice presidential candidates should not be the primary focus, and let’s hope whomever the election winner is, their vice president will not be as hands on as Dick Cheney, we still need to feel comfortable with and know a lot about them. The “what if” factor with both presidential candidates is legitimate and frightening.

As for HillBippie, I don’t know who I am going to vote for yet. I am disappointed in McCain’s giving in to the machine. This is the very machine that slimed him in 2000. I want him to be a true maverick and distance himself from the ignorance of “pig in lipstick”. His age concerns me. His choice in VP concerns me. I am wary of Obama and his Democratic empty rhetoric. The reality of Washington is that change will come at a snails pace. I would really like to hear from Obama what his top 3 issues are and how, specifically, he will change them….I‘d like to hear that from McCain as well. I do think either would make the best president we have had in 20 years. For the first time in my voting life I can honestly say I could be persuaded to vote for either candidate. If we can keep the extremist machines out of the process, we can get the best these candidates have to offer.

Bring it to the middle boys, America has to have it. My advice is to not forsake the Dollar General shopper; they need our country’s focus more than the Sam’s Club shopper. Hone your message, stop the attack and diversions, buckle down and give us specifics.

HillBippie

PS...
In the sense of being truly fair and balanced I have made a couple of tentative decisions abut the KY elections. Go Yarmuth! Go Mitch! This could change, but both of these candidates have served and will serve us well. Now, all I have to figure out is how I am going to pay for the $200 my family’s Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield health insurance increased this month…..can somebody address that please….what shade was that lipstick anyway?

You may have seen the HillBippie Bus driving around the Louisville area or a bumper sticker here and there...."What is HillBippie?", you may ask.  Simply put, we are here to encourage you to think outside of the box you checked when you registered to vote.  Funny, HillBippie has been here long before the media started shouting "Middle this, and Middle that".  We've been saying the answer lies in the middle, avoid the extremes!  So now that you can get that message live on TV whenever you want, I suppose we're here to simply encourage you to become involved in the democratic process.  We want you to learn about the candidates and make a wise decision based on your own values.  We want you to choose based on your personal beliefs and values, not just "vote your party"...because what is your party anymore?  I don't think any of us on either side know at this point.  I think if we really consider the true needs of this country and its people, we will see that we need to let go of those party lines and choose the candidate that will do right for the Middle majority that this country has become.  And, the future of this country is more important than loyalty to that box you checked on your voter registration card.

You Go Negative, You Lose More Than Just an Election.....

Greg Fischer is getting what he deserves ... He was running a solid campaign based on a change message and practical idealism. Then his campaign decided to go negative. The flyer that the Fischer campaign placed voters’ mailboxes began a relatively nasty attack on Bruce Lunsford. As a novice politician Fischer should have been prepared for the hammer that is now coming down on him in the form of the televised Lunsford attack ads . In the fashion of a schoolyard fight it somehow seems OK for Lunsford to attack back after being attacked. In this case, Fischer’s campaign is the bully. And, we all understand that it’s ok to push back against a bully.

Fischer was making a mark on KY politics but, I guess, was influenced by political “pros” to go negative. The Fischer campaign should have learned from the beat down Ann Northup took in subsequent senatorial and gubernatorial campaigns by going over the top negative. I swear, these political “pros” simply don’t get it. State the facts, state your position, do so positively, and don’t go negative….especially against a seasoned politician.

Fischer seems like a good enough person and had great intentions as a candidate. But, the form of attack ads his campaign chose to use was actually comically amateur in tone. It was literally a two-faced flyer that was mailed out or placed in voters’ mailboxes. The flyer of which I speak was actually brought to our attention by someone who wrote in to our website. One side was a “glamour shot” of Fischer touting his business record and his ideals for “making KY a better place”, and on the flip side was a grainy photo of Lunsford on stage with McConnell and Fletcher and talking about how he supported both. The flyer also pointed out his much publicized business misdeeds. While all of the accusations are mostly factual, it’s ground that’s been tread over (and over), and most voters understand that with Lunsford comes an immense amount of baggage.

Where Fischer missed his chance was by not capitalizing on and vocalizing his strengths as a business man, a concerned father, and as a person that has made an immense amount of money in the private sector that wants to give back to his state. While Mitch may prove to be unbeatable in a general election, it sure would have been nice to not have a lesser of two evils type of voting decision, as it appears we’ll have with Lunsford vs. Mitch. Now HillBippie isn’t a Mitch basher, he has served KY extraordinarily well over his tenure. But in the spirit of change and a departure from politics as usual, a good election debate with a fresh candidate would have been, well, refreshing.

May 20th is next Tuesday. Go vote, would ya.

It’s been a while since we updated the site. I have had to exercise fiscal responsibility and get back to being gainfully employed. We’ve been watching the campaign season unfold and have been heartened by what we have seen.

It’s a HillBippie world and we are just living in it. I’m so proud of the voters in America for showing up in record numbers during the primaries and caucuses. I’m also proud of this groundswell of support for change from both parties. The two most independent thinkers and progressive politicians will end up facing off with each other in November to determine who will lead our wonderful country into a rapidly changing world.

Voters across the country have seen that the Rove/Clinton machines were thinly veiled doppelgangers of one another. I think Michelle Obama may have been on to something with her comments about being proud of the country. From Clinton screwing everything in sight and lying about it during his reign to Bush/Cheney/Rove’s bungles and lies, there’s not been a lot to be proud of. Our once proud economic dominance of the world is starting to slip behind Europe and China. Our bungling foreign policy tactics and arrogance in dealing with things like climate change, all the way down to the greed exhibited by common Americans who insist on living in houses they can’t afford, have put our country in a very vulnerable state.

It’s going to take an enlightened leader, not beholden to special interest, to drag us through the coming recession and to restore our place of respect in the world. It’s going to take a cheerleader to encourage Americans to make a few sacrifices and practical decisions. It’s going to take a courageous soul to try diplomacy, and tough tactics globally instead of rushing to war, whether in the right (Afghanistan) or wrong (Iraq) locales. It’s going to take brilliant minds to figure out the health care mess our country is in. As a self employed entrepreneur I can speak to the incredible expense and shoddy plans available to most Americans.

For the first time in my memory we actually have a good choice of candidates from both parties. This will not be an election of choosing the lesser of two evils. As a recently declared independent (HillBippie) voter I could see myself voting for either candidate. I’m definitely going to want to dig in to the specific policies of each candidate and make an informed decision. But I am thrilled with the notion of having a Roveless/Clintonless option. I am thrilled with the fact that McCain is not as beholden to the religious right as previous Republican candidates. It would be very easy for me to get swept up in the Obama mystique. This is going to be fun to watch. I just wish they could be running mates, I wish they could agree that whomever won the general election the other would agree to be their vice president.

I hope everyone who reads this will engage in the political process and educate themselves as much as possible on each candidate. Don’t fall for smear tactics from either side. Write to the campaigns encouraging positive campaigning and a lack of negative attack ads.

Current Thoughts:

You Go Negative, You Lose.

The primaries passed and some interesting lessons were learned. The biggest lesson learned was that the old way of campaigning and running a campaign are gone. By old I mean the mean spirited ugliness that permeated politics throughout the 90’s and into the election of 2004, ending with the midterm elections of last year.

Anne Northup seemed to have learned nothing from her senatorial defeat and went right after the sitting governor of her own party in a negative fashion, stating that she was only forecasting what the Dems were going to do in Sept, Oct, and Nov. Meanwhile Gov. Fletcher ran a campaign highlighting past successes and future intentions and won handily.

The Democratic primary was equally if not more eye opening. Steve Beshear beat a heavily funded “favorite” in Bruce Lunsford. But it was the 11th hour pull away by Beshear that was interesting. If not for an endorsement from
Jonathon Miller and the 10’s of thousands of voters he had been able to reach with his “progressive – moderate” – dare we say HillBippie – stance, then we certainly would have faced a Lunsford ticket and campaign that promised to be less than positive.

As it stands KY is faced with a quality gubernatorial race with two campaigns that seem to want to keep the race above board with quality debates and fact based, forward looking, clean campaigning. The timing on our election is also going to put KY politics and our voters in a national limelight.

We’ve yet to decide how we are going to vote. But I vow to vote for the candidate who runs the cleanest race and outlines the best agenda for KY. One mantra we’d like to put forth to the political prognosticators and campaign advisors that will be keenly watching the KY gubernatorial election to identify trends for the nationwide election cycle in 2008 is this: You go negative you lose. Furthermore, Neo-cons and Liberals beware - the more moderate and progressive the candidate, the better the message, the better the likelihood of election victory. Kentucky can influence the rest of the country by doing three things in this upcoming election. 1) Listen with an open mind and educate ourselves about issues facing our state, 2) actually go vote, and, 3) Vote for the best candidate regardless of party affiliation.

It would be cool to have a record turnout for the election in November. It would send a strong message to the rest of the country. Please use HillBippie.com as a resource during the election season to either register to vote or to find your polling place. Choose a term that fits, “Progressive-moderate”, “Practical Idealism”, “HillBippie” and please help us spread the word.

Here at HillBippie we have been pondering the future direction of our website and mission. We want to create a community that can truly make a difference.  Several paths have been considered and we have decided to focus our efforts on Voter Registration and Voter Turnout, and general participation and involvement in the political process.

This is the most important election cycle, certainly in my lifetime, but possibly in the history of our country.

We all must be involved in the election process afforded us by our democracy. We must encourage participation in our democracy like never before. The simplest way to do this is by simply registering to vote, then actually going to the polls to vote.

During the mid term elections last year much was made of a record turnout of voters that numbered 42% of registered voters. That number baffles me. With all that was going on in the world and the drastic change that was affected by these 42% of registered voters, what kept the other 58% away? ... not to mention those who simply had not registered to vote.

We have some theories as to the reason for not only the disengagement, but also the disinterest of many Americans in the voting process. But it’s the usual diatribes against the establishment, the media, the RNC and DNC machines, special interest groups….in short THE MAN! So we won’t go there.

Where we will go is to announce our new mission. Voter registration and Voter turnout are the two things HillBippie will focus on over the next year and a half.

Most of the voter registration drives have been associated with the two parties. Rock The Vote was/is inherently left leaning and the Young Republicans were very aggressive earlier in this decade in recruiting college students. With HillBippie’s middle stance we just want people to be engaged and to realize that now, more than ever, every vote counts.

With local elections being determined by 100’s of votes, congressional elections being decided by less than 1,000 votes, and national elections so close that it takes a Supreme Court ruling to determine the winner, we don’t see how anyone can say their vote doesn’t count.

We will provide links to sites and other types of resources that will help you educate others as to how easy it is to register and how simply showing up at the polls is easy and rewarding. The bottom line is we don’t care whether you register Republican or Democrat or Independent or Other. Just register….then vote in the primaries and general election.

How HillBippie fits in? By simply buying a HillBippie shirt and wearing it from time to time you can engage those around you. Our logo and name draw attention. What the logo and name say about those associated with it is that they are informed, interested, and active in the democratic process. We want the shirt to be a badge of honor and serve as a viral recruitment tool to get others involved in the process.  You can order from our
Shop page, or you can find them exclusively at EarX-tacy   (Bardstown Rd in Louisville).  Our you can email us at  HillBippie@insightbb.com  us with your contact info and we'll make payment arrangements.

Also, there is a very well formed and organized group that is taking action on behalf of the middle part of the country. UNITY 08 is taking action in a way little old HillBippie.com could never. Please take this link to their site and check it out.

Also, check out these two stories that were recently in the Louisville Courier Journal. Politicians are hearing the growing rumble from the middle. Read to see:

A Campaign Based on Ideas by Greg Rankin (he is Kentucky's youngest county judge-executive, newly elected in Wayne County).

"I come from a generation that is tired of the partisanship," says KY State Treasurer, Jonathan Miller, gubernatorial candidate. "It's tired of the polarization. It's tired of the good ol' boy system where decisions are made in smoke-filled rooms behind closed doors."

We’re going to attempt to engage people on the very things that are never supposed to enter polite conversation, Politics and Religion. Fortunately we are engaging each other in a virtual nether world, so no awkward forays into conversation about the weather or the threat of fisticuffs can dissuade us from speaking from the heart, or in any way inhibit what our collective consciences have allowed us to metabolize as our very singular and personal belief system. So if you are far left or far right or smatterings of everything put together, let’s throw it out there and see if we can communicate our way to common ground or Higher Ground.

It is our goal to entertain and to inform. We intend to update the site regularly until we get up to speed; then we hope to make this a place to stop by for new compelling content, music reviews and new observations by YOU – “

Proving that we are onto something...this is the November 20, '06 cover of Time Magazine:

"Why the Center Is the New Place To Be"
by Joe Klein

We at HillBippie thought we would resurrect the lost art of the odd observation

Larry King used to write a weekly column in USA TODAY through the 80’s and early 90’s that I used to make so much fun of when I was in college. The column consisted of strange observations and anecdotes about things and people he liked. He would write things like, and these are all made up by us, not actual Larry King-isms:
“That Ann Reinking is one fine dancer and great Broadway star, but Juliette Prowse, that broad turned me on, and what a set of gams.” And like this, “Katz Deli has great pastrami, but for the best Reuben nobody beats Carnegie Deli.” And like this, “Donald Trump, that’s one classy fellow with a great head of hair”

Here’s our first pass at this:

*If you need rain, schedule an election

*Wouldn’t it make sense to have the Presidential term be limited to one 6 year term, but allow the former president to run again after sitting out one 6 year term?

*I actually heard somebody say this last week: the University of Louisville’s loss to Rutgers was God’s punishment for Ann Northup losing….I hope he was kidding, but I think he really thought it….Sick Bastard. Then again, the way athletes thank God when something good happens, He’s bound to be part of the reason for failures too.

*Why are we celebrating the fact that 40% of eligible voter’s actually voted? I am proud of the turnout our fellow citizens put forth, yet ashamed like hell of the
60% who sat this one out.

*For us, watching this mid-term election was like watching the Super Bowl, the World Series, the Final Four, and we would imagine one of those NASCAR races (not a fan of the racing…can you tell?) all in one.

*Ed Bradley, when we get to heaven we want to hang out with you.

*We think we actually heard this on the news last week but haven’t found the story backing it up. Charles Rangel (Dem. NY), who will likely be heading up the House Ways and Means Committee, allegedly said that he wanted to kick Cheney out of the office that Cheney occupies on the Hill, because that had traditionally been the office that Ways and Means occupied. Nice priority there Charles. This is exactly the kind of petty stuff that cost the Dems the majority in 96 and the GOP this majority….Rangel, shut up and concentrate on stuff that matters. NOTE:
If you read this and heard something about this let us know if it’s true. (or hillbippie@insightbb.com )

*To understand a word, you have to break it down to its roots. According to Kinky Friedman the word politics is broken down as follows:
poly – meaning more than one, and ticks – blood sucking parasites

*You heard it here first. If we were betting people we’d lay good money down that Britney Spears will cut a country album in the next two years. And, it will sell millions. Her train wreck, trailer park wannabe, of a life is a country album. When her next pop album flops some manager will take her to Nashville….that’s what I would do if I were her manager.

*Don’t be blocking the blessings. A good friend of mine lost his home in Katrina. He’s a fairly famous New Orleans musician named Paul Sanchez. A group of college kids came down to gut some houses, and when they found out who he was they asked if they could meet him. Another musician friend of his, John Boutte, arranged it. Paul was apprehensive about going to the house because he hadn’t been there since initially seeing the damage and having to pour through years of memories, so he and his wife could salvage anything salvageable. It really took a toll on him and his wife, and I’ve heard from other Katrina survivors that in some ways this was the hardest part of their experience. Well, Paul sucked it up and went to meet the kids. The words that got him there was when Boutte said firmly to him, “You’ve been given a blessing. These kids gutted your house for free. Now get down there and meet them….Don’t be blocking the blessings!” On a personal note to Paul – Thank you for sharing that story with us, it has changed the way we look at things and given us a mantra of sorts. Also, Good Luck as you take on your new journey in life.

*On a somewhat related note and jumping on Rangel again...
Man, your comments on Mississippi are over the top offensive. Pelosi really should have come down on you and publicly asked you to be more sensitive. As Ways and Means chairperson you will have influence on how and where dollars are allocated and spent. There is still devastation in Mississippi and Louisiana and people are hurting and in need. It’s lifelong politicians like you, Charles Rangel, that are aloof to the needs of Middle America. Rangel, as Stephen Colbert might say, "We’re watching you".

Regardless of what you are going through or where you may be in life, don’t be blocking the blessings,

We didn’t agree on the reasons for going to war. We both agreed on what should be done to end it. This is an e-mail reply to him further explaining my views...
